Slain Kenyan-born runner Damaris Muthee laid to rest

Damaris Muthee Mutua the Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete who was murdered last month has been laid to rest.

Muthee’s body was interred at Katisaa, Machakos County, on Thursday.

She was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend – an Ethiopian. Her body was found in a rental house in Lillies, Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County. An autopsy report revealed that she was strangled to death.

Police suspect her alleged killer Eskanda Hailemariam was after her wealth. In late April, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that it will involve the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to trace the suspect. He is believed to have escaped to Ethiopia.

During the burial, Athletics Kenya (AK) officials called on the government to ensure justice is served.

“This is another heart-breaking case of a life cut short and talent washed down the drain, considering the achievement Damaris had made in her career. Her death is more painful considering that this is not the first time a bright future has been snuffed out by violence suspected to be gender based violence. It is a loss, not only to her family, but also to the entire athletics fraternity. As Athletics Kenya, we pray for justice from authorities,” said AK President Jackson Tuwei.
